StatCounter says Windows 7 is off to ‘encouraging’ start [guffaw]

November 3, 2009

Geez Louise this has gotta sting and more than a little. To date, two of the more prominent Web metrics firms have pegged Microsoft’s operating system launch somewhere between good for Apple and the Mac, to better than Vista. So much for a holiday home run for Redmond this Christmas shopping season.

StatCounter has announced its web usage data report for October and the numbers are looking very good for the Mac and Windows XP. Whereas Windows 7 is winning over most Vista users making a change, those running older “the devil they know” versions of the company’s operating system are unimpressed, showing little movement toward Redmond’s latest “it can’t be worse than last time” iteration of Windows.

According to StatCounter, the amount of Web traffic attributable to Windows 7 has jumped from 1.75 percent to 2.82 percent from its Oct. 22 launch through the end of the month. And, as the web metrics firm acidly notes, this is an “encouraging” start.

“Windows 7 has hit the ground running and the underlying trend is positive for Microsoft,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “The new operating system should be further boosted by December holiday season sales of computers, which will have Windows 7 pre-installed.”

That said, I sincerely doubt anyone in Redmond had been hoping for an encouraging start — a home run is what they needed. It’s also interesting to note that the holiday “should,” not will, give Windows 7 and Microsoft a boost, according to StatCounter’s Cullen.

As this handy dandy chart shows, web traffic attributable to Windows 7 users did noticeably tick up and Vista down. However, just as noticeable is the fact that traffic attributable to Mac users also ticked up, from 11.29 to 11.87 percent, and that Windows XP users don’t seem to be in any mood for change at all.

These numbers closely mirror Net Applications web metrics data Blorge published Sunday, showing that Windows 7 market share was rising rapidly but also that Apple’s Macintosh was still gaining and that XP users were largely unmoved by these events.

Well, at least it’s not a train wreck like Vista, right? Guffaw…

Not exactly a home run for MS. And the Windows 7 commercials are lame. One shows a teenager bragging that Windows no longer freezes and crashes now with Windows 7. WOW. Even MS admits that its previous OS was lousy. So what guarantee is there that this one won’t also be no good?

I liked XP hate Vista and will be buying Windows 7 soon. This will be the second time buying an OS for an upgrade rather than on a new PC.

Way too early to be even thinking seriously about this. If, as it seems so far, Windows 7 is quite a reasonable OS, then all those Vista-shy PC people will start to shift over as the lack of disasters becomes apparent. Vista would sure put you off being a first week adopter – see how things look in six weeks or so, then we’ll have a real idea how it’s going.

So, it still has a registry, right? And DLL problems, and security problems built right in? And multitasking problems? And hibernation problems?

    Sounds like windoze to me.

I wouldn’t trust Microsoft to get anything right after Vista. With all the updates that Microsoft put out their operating system is crap. Always advice how to speed up your computer when the OS should just run in the first place.
