Apple urging all users to download, install Apple TV 3.0.1 Update
As is oft the case with software updates, it’s two steps forward and one back. With the just released Apple TV 3.0, users are reporting that upgraded units lose or are unable to play all of the content loaded on those machines.
TUAW reports that Apple is offering an unusual Saturday software patch. Specifically, Apple TV 3.0.1 is designed to address an issue whereby content stored on an upgraded machine will either disappear or become unplayable — all of it.
According to the Knowledge Base Article TS3116, the symptoms are:
You are using Apple TV software version 3.0 and all of your movies, TV shows, and songs appear to be missing, or you are using Apple TV software version 3.0 and all of your movies, TV shows, and songs appear to be present, but you have not yet updated to Apple TV software version 3.0.1.
Thereupon, the mothership has notified Apple TV customers that a patch is available and that they should download it ASAP to prevent the issue from re-occurring. MacRumors quotes the email being circulated by the mothership as saying:
Dear Customer,
If you’ve installed the Apple TV 3.0 software update, you should immediately update to version 3.0.1. This prevents content from temporarily disappearing until it is resynced.
To update your Apple TV software:
1. Reboot your Apple TV (unplug the power cord & plug it back in)
2. Select Settings > General from the main menu
3. Select Update Software
4. Select Download and InstallNote: Your Apple TV will conduct a restart, which is followed by the Apple logo and a status bar.

That’s pretty straight forward, and according to MR forum posters the Apple TV 3.0.1 works as advertised.
It’s worth noting that not all Apple TV are experiencing these issues, though it isn’t clear why folks are losing their stuff (i.e. on their ATV, Mac copies of the content aren’t affected) and other aren’t.
