OS X 10.6.2 kills Atom support, fixes Photoshop issues

November 11, 2009

By now we’ve all heard how big nasty Apple killed support for Intel’s Atom processor, and netbooks in the bargain, with its second Snow Leopard dot update. What you might now know, however, is that while Cupertino was slapping the homebrew hackintosh crowd around with one hand it was massaging its codebase with the other to resolve a number of longstanding Photoshop issues.

Yesterday, Apple released OS X 10.6.2, which patches the infamous “guest account data” issue as well as a dozen or so other issues large and small. It also effectively kills support for Intel’s Atom processor, which powers the majority of netbooks and by extension hackintoshed netbooks currently roaming the streets.

“The latest kernel may not be “officially” supported but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a modded kernel around the corner,” writes Stell, who’s been pivotal in identifying Apple’s “treachery” and disseminating information about the issue.

Cupertino taketh [and giveth]

Among the other unheralded changes in OS X 10.6.2 is that this version of Snow Leopard fixes a number of problems Photoshop users have endured since the release of Apple’s Intel-only operating system. According to Jack Nack’s official Adobe blog, these fixes include the a range of issues affecting multiple version of the industry-standard image editor, as well as problems specific to CS4.

Affecting multiple versions of Photoshop:

• When opening and saving, applications, including Adobe applications, may sporadically crash
• Images don’t open when dragged onto the Adobe program icon in the Dock
• Crash or program error occurs when using Menlo font in Photoshop and Premiere CS3 and CS4

CS4-specific:

• Only one image opens when more than one is dragged onto Photoshop’s icon
• Cursors don’t display correctly in Photoshop CS4
• Editing in Photoshop CS4 fails from 64-bit Lightroom in OS X 10.6
• Cannot drag from Safari onto Photoshop icon (and other application icons) in Dock to open file

Apple’s attempt to ban hackintoshed netbooks, at least for your off-label dollar, is related to the upcoming release of the company’s Mac tablet (a.k.a iPod touch on steroids). It might be that Steve Jobs et al are behaving like bastards because they can and not because of any overarching strategic considerations — that’s always a possibility when you’re dealing with Cupertino.

Thereupon, I expected that the hackintosh community will offer modded kernal quickly — it’s just a matter of time.

Nevertheless, the improvements hidden under the hood of OS X 10.6.2 — I experienced the “only one image opens” issue — for Photoshop are welcome.

Have you found any other unexpected surprises buried in the latest version of Snow Leopard?

  1. Philip Hresko:

Since I downloaded the 10.6.2 update 2 days ago my Display looks like it is thinking I have a 15″ Display.
    I tried the following:
    1) In System Preferences I selected ” detect displays”.
    2) Re-downloaded 10.6.2
    Nothing change.

    When will this be corrected?
