Mac mini most efficient, MacBooks rank well in UK energy survey

November 28, 2009

When Apple shipped an updated version of its most-affordable computer back in October, it said that the Mac mini is the world’s most efficient desktop. Now, there’s independent confirmation of that from a U.K. group that’s compared 100 systems and found all but Apple’s wanting, as well as affirmation of the high efficiency of the company’s laptop offerings.

Sust-it, an independent testing group which bills itself as “the best place to find energy saving electricals,” has announced their updated desktop Computers ranked by annual running cost and various configurations of Apple’s entry-level headless desktop have nailed down four of the Top 5 spots.

“There’s a staggering difference between the energy consumption of computers in the marketplace; you could save nearly £150 per year on electricity in choosing the most efficient models,” Ross from sust-it said. “We’ve been highlighting these savings through our unique ranking system and it’s great news that Apple has responded to the environmental issues, I hope other manufacturers will follow their lead.”

Likewise, a pair of iMacs graces sust-it’s all-in-one Top 10 and four Apple portables—MacBook Air, MacBook, two 13 inch MacBook Pros—hold spots in the laptop Top 10, as well.

sust-it, which has ranked more than 5000 electrical products from TVs to chest freezers by their energy efficiency, says that a savvy consumer could save up to £600 (calculated using average UK electricity rates, about US$1,000) a year by buying energy saving products.

Yet another fine example of how paying a bit more for an Apple product delivers superior return on investment…

Actually, the result is even more impressive when you look at the systems in the listing. The iMac is using a respectable Core 2 Duo processor and decent sized hard drive. Most of the other top computers are using Sempron or Atom processors.
