How to: Install, keep software updates in Apple’s OS X 10.6
With the advent of Snow Leopard, Mac users can no longer quickly and easily download and save updates from within the Software Update application. Thankfully, an eager beaver with scripting abilities has gone and solved this problem for the rest of us.
Like a lot of us, Systemsboy (a.k.a. Sean McPherson) bemoans the fact that Snow Leopard no longer allows users to download and keep software updates using Apple’s otherwise convenient and well crafted Software Update app.
Do you miss the ability to download and keep software updates directly from the Software Update application? I sure do. So I wrote a Software Update Download Service (81KB download) for Snow Leopard that will download and keep a copy of all updates recommended by the Software Update app. — Systemsboy.
You will need to Download it, unstuff it and put it in ~/Library/Services folder in your home directory. To use it, simply go to the Services menu item (any app or the Finder) and select “Software Update Download.”
It will check for updates, download them, save them to the “Updates” folder in the top level of your home directly and then open Software Update so you can install any available updates. If there aren’t any updates available, Software Update will open and tell you.
As noted, this service is a script and, if you’re the curious type, open it in Automater and check it out for yourself. Just double click it and it will open in Automater, then you can have a look or customize the script (i.e. designate a different save location; ~Desktop/Updates)
Pretty sweet. Gotta cool tip or tutorial for the rest of us here on Mac Blorge? Jot a quick not and link in the comments below…
