University of South Florida athletes get their MacBook Pros
How many USF football players does it take to change a light bulb now? Still don’t know, but couch says he’s spoken with a alumnus who’s actually done it before and we just got a truckload of MacBook Pros, so hold on.
As expected, The University of South Florida announced that all of its 460-plus student athletes will be using MacBook Pros in the semesters ahead as part of a game-changing educational technology initiative.

“The goal is to create an anywhere, anytime learning environment for each of our student-athletes,” said USF Athletics Director Doug Woolard. “Apple’s MacBook Pro will assist in providing comprehensive academic support services while accommodating the demanding practice and travel schedules of our student-athletes. Our traveling teams will now be connected to classes, academic advisors and tutors anywhere in America, or for that matter the entire world.”
“We’re thrilled to be working with Apple and leveraging its more than 30 years in education,” said University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft. “Our use of innovative technology will directly improve the educational opportunities for the more than 460 student-athletes enrolled in over 2,400 different courses each semester.”
No, the athletes don’t get to keep these 13-inch MacBook Pros — NCAA rules prohibit “gifts” — so they have to sign them out each semester. Also, academic materials are available via iTunes University, Apple’s online coursework database.
There’s been a bit of skepticism about this program around the Web. Thereupon, I checked Apple’s top executives to see who’s a USF alum and none were. Still, I believe there’s gotta be a connection somewhere…
