Google hawks Chrome for the Mac

Google hawks Chrome for the MacNow that Google’s Chrome browser is ready for the Mac, as well as for Windows and Linux, the company is making a concerted effort to get the users to switch to their new browser.

Google search users will quickly notice this new push for the Chrome browser. If you are on a Mac and not browsing with Chrome, the graphic which accompanies this column will show up in the upper right-hand corner of your browser window. Clicking on it, of course, will take you to a page where you will be able to download the latest build of Chrome for the Mac. Although it is not quite ready for prime time on the Mac platform, the reviews of the most mature version of the browser, that for Windows, have been generally positive.

The Chrome browser is rapidly gaining a following. The release of the Mac and Linux versions of the Google flagship browser seems to have pushed it into the third spot in the most-used browser list. That would put it behind Internet Explorer and Firefox, but ahead of Apple’s Safari, which previously occupied the third position. Chrome’s overall market share is now in the neighborhood of 4.4 percent, according to the most recent Net Applications data. On the Mac platform, though, just since the beta launch, Chrome has already risen one full percentage point. Not bad for the new kid on the block.

It should be noted that the Mac version of Chrome is not yet firing on all cylinders, according to a Washington Post story. For example, a complete bookmarking system is still missing, as is access to extensions, though both of these features are included in the Windows version. It is taking a while for Google to catch up on what it obviously considers to be the smaller markets. Still, interested Mac users have but to click on the Chrome ad on the Google search page to give Chrome a whirl, though it will not be the full experience until Google catches the Mac version up to the Windows version.
