Apple stock at all-time high on tablet rumor

December 25, 2009

Apple stock at all-time high on tablet rumorApple stock rose dramatically just before the Christmas Wall Street holiday buzzer to hit $209.04 per share, up more than $2 a share compared to its previous high in mid-November.

Although much of the current buzz being generated is about the phantom Apple tablet computer, the new record price is built mainly on the back of solid iPhone, iPod, and Mac sales throughout the year. The year 2009 has been a banner one for Apple, which apparently was allowed to escape the world wide recession unscathed. Of course, the other way to look at it is to ask how well things would have gone for the Cupertino computer and smartphone giant if the surrounding economy had been healthy. The stock might be over $300 in a positive environment.

Perhaps the final push for the year in Apple stock came when news surfaced that Apple had rented a stage at Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco for a date in late January. This caused industry and financial pundits to make the assumption that the stage would be used for the introduction of the iTablet, according to an LATimes story. The projected Apple tablet is expected to be more or less an iPod Touch on steroids, with a touchscreen of approximately 10 inches, making it a perfect size use as a personal video player and e-book reader.

Not everyone agrees with the inevitability of the release of an Apple tablet computer. The Financial Times had this to say: “Apple has explored making tablet style devices for years, only to back off. The company also has a history of scrapping products very close to their scheduled launch dates.” If the Apple tablet is not released soon, it will be one of history’s largest unfounded rumors. Apple has yet to say a word about those rumors, which have been floating around for many months. There is every chance that a lot of Apple fans have been saving their latte tips for all of that time, just for a chance at an iTablet.
