Apple sells record number of Macs
An Apple financial analyst says that Apple is set to release another record performance report later this month on Mac computer sales covering the final quarter of 2009.
Brian Marshall, the Apple guru at BroadPoint AmTech, is estimating that total Mac sales will come in at about 3.3 million units for the last quarter of 2009. If BroadPoint’s calculations are on the money, the numbers will show that Apple has broken their Mac sales record, set in the third calendar quarter of 2009. In that quarter, Apple sold 3.05 million Macs, according to a Computer World article. The most recent quarter is estimated to be up by as much as 250,000 computers, an increase of 8.5 percent.
Apple’s performance during the global economic recession has been astonishing, and the expected Mac numbers are no exception. Assuming Marshall’s estimates are correct, last quarter will be a 31 percent increase over the fourth calendar quarter last year, when they sold 2.3 million systems. That will put them right back on track for a repeat of the massive gains they enjoyed in 2008, when they had quarter-over-quarter gains of as much as 51 percent. As we come out of the recession, given Apple’s performance during tough economic times, Apple might be looking at truly large computer system sales numbers.
Gartner Research estimates that overall growth in computer sales in 2009 will be just 2 percent. Apple has certainly done much, much better than that in 2009, and they seem poised to do even better in the coming year. New MacBooks and the new iMac are doing quite well already, and should continue to do so in the first part of 2010, after which the upgrade cycle will repeat itself. Perhaps based on the cachet of the iPhone and iPod lines as well as that of the Mac, and in anticipation of the iTablet, Apple seems to have captured the imagination of the computer-buying public. Most analysts appear to be of the opinion that the upward Apple trend will continue in 2010.
