Apple misses Windows 7 Bootcamp compatibility deadline
The mothership is generally pretty good about keeping the promises it makes, but here’s one they’ve missed. Back in October, the Cupertino, California-based Mac, iPod and iPhone said we could expect the required Bootcamp update by year’s end — that date’s obviously come and gone.
On Thursday, Oct. 22, Apple published a hotly anticipated support article on the issue of Windows 7, which stated unequivocally that the company would issue a software update that would bring compatibility with Microsoft’s “new” operating system by before the New Year.
Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.”
Well, Apple’s deadline has come and gone, and still no Boot Camp update.
AppleInsider managed to get ahold of the customer support representative in charge of Boot Camp inquiries:
The representative said it was very unlikely that the update would surface in the next 24 hours, adding that a release sometime early next year would be a safer bet.”
That’s a rather vague, unsatisfying answer, though certainly not the fault of the person making the reply.
That said, are you waiting for this update or have you already moved your Windows install to one of the excellent virtualization products — Parallels, VMware Fusion, VirtualBox, etc? Drop us a note in the comments below…

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with Bootcamp on my 27″ iMac running Snow Leopard, no issues. My buds are all running Win 7 on Parallels with their machines. You just need to play with the install a bit to make it work. CMon already Apple, we could use an update soon!

I removed the hard drive that came with my Early 2008 Macbook Pro and replaced it with a 256GB SAMSUNG SSD then installed windows 7 with Bootcamp 2.1 I’m very happy and it’s very stable, hasn’t crashed since install of Windows 7 on October 2009. I’m not running Mac OSX at all. That said, what’s up APPLE? Are you afraid that MS released a better operating system than OSX that performs better even better on MacBook? Ha ha, ha ha!

Hey rw66,
Where did you purchase your SSD for your 2008 MBP? If I may ask, how much did you pay?
(I’ll refrain from asking the n00bish question “How much did it speed up your MacBook and stuff?” lol)
Thanks,
Dan

Using bootcamp with windows 7 now. The main thing I’m waiting for is magic mouse scroll. Everything else is working well but magic mouse scroll is imperative.

I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro and I only run Xp on it. I played around with OS X for a while and although it looks nice, I found it much less usable and configurable than Windows.
So, I’m waiting patiently for Apple to get their stuff together and release an update that is compatible with Windows 7.

Waiting impatiently for the update. Specifically for proper Bluetooth drivers. They worked fine for vista but not for windows 7 (if the Bluetooth device goes to sleep, you can’t wake it up; you have to remove the device and then re-add it!)

@Ryarr:
I was able to get magic mouse scrolling to work on Vista by downloading the drivers for the Microsoft sidewinder x8 mouse.
Once those drivers installed, i was able to get full functionality for the magic mouse.
Hope this helps.

RESPONSE TO DAN:
I purchased the SAMSUNG SSD from ebay and I paid a premium for it at the time it was very new. (around $800). You can get much better deals nowadays from newegg under CRUCIAL and CORSAIR brands, essentially the same drive. Is it worth it? No, I boot into windows in about 45 seconds but the speed gained for price paid does not justify. Also, if you’re considering about swapping drives, make sure to get one without G-shock motion sensor. There are rumors that built in motion sensor on MBPs conflicts with motion sensors on new HDs. Fortunately SSDs don’t need gforce motion protection by design.
