Tim Cook top candidate for General Motors CEO spot
The first time I heard this rumor, my first thought was that somebody, at least one person, with a brain is obviously on the job at the automaker. That is, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer is widely regarded as a genius in his own right, a fact easily forgotten given the insanely great company he keeps.
Silicon Valley Insider reports that an executive search firm, more rightly known as head hunters and an often unscrupulous lot, hired by General Motors has put Apple COO Tim Cook at the top of their list of desirable candidates to take the CEO spot at troubled automaker.
Tim would be a bold choice for GM and a clean break with the car company’s past. Cars are vastly different than gadgets, but the magic Apple has brought to consumer product design could be just what GM needs to turn itself around,” writes Silicon Insider.
Of course, given Cook’s generous compensation — about $14 million for 2009 — at Apple, not to mention the likely gilded satisfaction of running arguably the best corporation in the world, it’s hard to imagine him taking the job. Then again, it just such challenges, like as GM, that tempt Tim Cooks of the world.
An interesting twist is that GM has already hired a new CFO, Chris Liddell, from Microsoft, an organization dominated by bean counters and salesman. Although these men are both top predators and know the rules of the game, one wonders how Cook and Liddel would get along, coming from polar opposite corporate cultures.
Do you think Cook wants and is up to the challenge of rescuing General Motors? He’s already played a pivotal role in saving one basket case…
What’s your take?
