Apple to launch hybrid iPhone/iSlate SDK on January 27

January 4, 2010

Since rumors of the Mac tablet, iPod touch on steroids or iSlate, if you prefer, started circulating, the question of whether it would be more Mac or iPhone-like have swirled without a definitive answer. Though Apple has yet to speak on the subject, fresh insights arose today with a launch date correction, confirmation of the device’s size and even a little insight on the future direction of Apple’s operating system plans.

French site Mac4Ever (Google translation via Cult of Mac) is claiming that, alongside the iSlate, Apple plans to rollout a new, tablet/iPhone version of its mobile software development kit (SDK):

Several of our sources give us information on two famous Apple Tablet: end of January, in addition to its tablet, Cupertino should have a beta of iPhone OS 4, with its SDK. Our informants we also speak of a “simulator” specially adapted to the tablet. A priori, the great novelty of this SDK therefore concern interfaces, making it easier for developers adapting to different screen resolutions. The new iPhone could also benefit from a higher pixel density. These information is taken with the tongs to use.”

Of course, the exact shape, size and color of this hybrid SDK isn’t known — whether cleaves more closely to the iPhone or Mac sides of things, for example — but Apple isn’t building a third operating; it’s creating a consolidated mobile platform.

Handle with tongs

Thereupon, that last bit in the quote, when fully translated from the Google’s intermediate Froglish, probably should read, “with a grain of salt.” And, indeed, even though this particular rumor has a certain ring of Applesque authenticity to it, nothing’s real until the skinny guy is done singing…

What’s your take?

I think someone ought to have at least tried to translate the translation!

That aside, I did read a rumour that makes a lot of sense — Apple are secretly doing deals with media houses to get rich media ebooks ready for their new tablet, which will do for the ebooks what the original iPod did for portable music.
