Apple said brewing multitouch iWork for the tablet

January 10, 2010

More information about Apple’s soon to be unveiled tablet interface has trickled out courtesy of former Apple engineers dishing on the QT of course. Then there’s the growing body of rumors about the mothership’s productivity suite, which might be getting a big cloud-based, collaborative makeover for the tablet.

A recent iWork team job posting indicates that Apple’s working on or planning to move the company’s productivity suite farther into the cloud with an emphasis collaborative features.

Further thereto, fresh rumors being spouted by former Apple engineers quoted anonymously by The New York Times claims that iWork is getting a multitouch makeover specifically for the tablet, as well. Right or wrong, these rumors together jibe well and sounds like the creamy smooth, “it all just works” approach our friends in Cupertino favor.

Tying all of this together, according to more former Apple engineers, is the use of FingerWorks technology, which Apple acquired back in nought seven.

“The tablet should offer any number of unique multitouch experiences — for example, three fingers down and rotate could mean ‘open an application,’ ” said one former engineer, who shall forever remain nameless.

And, whereas The Times wonders aloud if Apple’s building a full-function computer, the rest of us know — especially those of us that own an iPod touch — the real question is how will Apple once again refine and redefine the meaning of computer?

That said, I’m betting there won’t be an optical, printer drivers or Adobe’s filthy “plunder my digital life” Flash animations, but there will be big color, motion and awesome typography…

What’s your take?
