Hulu chief hints at Hulu for iPad, iPhone…

January 30, 2010

Although the haters have declared streamed TV on the iPad and iPhone dead due to Apple’s judicious exclusion of Flash, there’s perhaps good reason to believe that we have much to look forward to. Still, nothing’s certain until it shows up on the iTunes App Store and AT&T always seems ready to kill the joy.

GigaOM is reporting comments by Hulu CEO Jason Kilar that would seem — he doesn’t give much if anything away — to indicate that Hulu on the iPad and iPhone could be in the cards.

“We are very big believers in mobile and we don’t think about (just) one device only,” says Kilar. “Mobile is a monster – we are very bullish. We will embrace any device.”

Whereas that’s a pretty strong endorsement for a guy who’s notoriously tightlipped, he neither specifically mentions Apple mobile devices nor does he rule them out. Still, the mothership is the clear market leader with a platform that’s not only ubiquitous, but also highly profitable for its partners.

That said, with YouTube and Vimeo already moving their industry-leading video delivery platforms away from Adobe’s proprietary, buggy and insecure Flash to HTML5, it’s not hard to imagine Hulu doing the right thing, as well.

Now, that would be something to use (and celebrate)…

What’s your take?

Please be true… Please be true… Please be true.

Not only because I want to use a service like Hulu on my iPad, but Flash is far to buggy and bloated to still be used in this new decade. Hulu phasing out Flash would be probably be a final blow to the slow dying program.

… don’t count on it – Flash is an amazing tool which has capabilities far exceeding HTML5. For the right applications it will be around and available until something better arrives … and there’s nothing on the horizon yet. iPhone, iPad, iTouch – your loss (as many of your customers are telling you). My vote goes for allowing users to make their own minds up – allow people to install Flash if they want, you’d be amazed at how many will! Or is that too free world for Agent Smith, sorry, Steve Jobs.

Hey nick. I hope Adobe is paying you to AstroTurf here

I wouldn’t bet on Hulu going HTML5 anytime soon for 1 reason… DRM. Vimeo and YouTube is user-produced content, whereas Hulu is network and cable produced content where the provider actually cares whether or not their content is being ripped off or watched without the required DRM and ad-based revenue…. until HTML5 supports DRM (and I wouldn’t hold your breath on that either) I really doubt seeing network-produced content (other than maybe clips) available in HTML5 video tags.

Flash is not that bad. Without flash there would be no homestar runner easter eggs.

Flash is a great plugin. It is the most efficient vector animation program, and it has a powerful programing language that lets you easily create games, applications, and animations. It is a great tool that is easy enough for artists to learn.

Flash runs great, even on old pc’s, I think it’s just slow on macs. The internet sucks without flash, most sites use it. It’s not going to go away just because your iphone doesn’t support it.

The ipad is going to be a worse failure than the newton.

  7. Rak:

Flash old and bloated? Only on macs and even then honestly only on older systems. Just because it runs slow on a particular OS, doesn’t mean it is garbage. Flash is not going away anytime soon.

Anybody reading this article should notice the obvious bias. Hooray for journalistic integrity I guess.

PS: Just kidding guys!! I am a total fagbag.

  9. Jann:

Ummm Peter? HTML5 CAN include DRM! Apple’s streaming HTTP implementation for the iPhone specifically allows it.
