27-inch iMac problems did not cause shortages

February 3, 2010

Although there have been problems with the new 27-inch iMac, and those same machines have been in short supply, the two are not related, according to Apple. Instead, popularity is the supply culprit.

The 27-inch iMac, beautiful though it is, has had some significant problems with with its displays, namely a problem with screen flickering and another with a yellowish cast to displays. Although the display problems, especially the flickering, are fairly widespread, Apple has apparently solved the flickering  problem completely with a second update for the 27-inch systems. Reports would indicate that almost all of the users that have applied the patch are no longer seeing the problems, with very few exceptions, according to a story on TheRegister, making it seem like the problem has been solved,

Although it was reported in the press that the problems had caused Apple to stop production of the largest iMac model, that apparently was untrue. These reports appeared yesterday, laying the reason for the longer-than-usual wait times for the 27-inch model on Apple having stopped production due to the flickering issue. The Wall Street Journal followed up on this report by talking with Apple. According to them, Apple said that, “The 27-inch iMac has been a huge hit with customers and we are working to increase supply to meet up with strong demand.” Regardless, the spokesman said that Apple has been working diligently to correct the problems. A salesman at the Leawood, KS, store said that they had both models of the 27-inch iMac in stock yesterday.

There are still a few users complaining of the flickering problem even after applying the second fix, but that group would appear to be very much in the minority.  Most users that have complained are reporting on Apple forums that the problems have gone away after patch application. The problems with a slight yellow cast to the display’s output were much rarer, and the latest patch had nothing to do with than problem. The “yellow” is being handled in a separate, much smaller thread in Apple support forums and as yet there has been no solution reported.

Apples are near perfection. Apple implies so. They’ve been perfect ever since they were made. Every one of them. Apple never lies or exaggerates. Any detractors here are shills for MS.
