Jobs said to be planning authorized biography

February 16, 2010

The guy who kept the nature and extent of his various illnesses over the course of years as secret as he could — no complaint from me — is said to be preparing to tell the story of his life in collaboration with a top biographer. One wonders, however, what will get included and to what extent the Apple CEO’s famed “reality distortion field” will play in shaping the book.

The New York Times reports that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is in the planning stages — grain o’ salt — of an authorized biography that will be penned in collaboration with Walter Isaacson, former managing editor of Time magazine. Further, it’s said that the book will cover “the entire life” of the tech visionary.

Thereupon, Isaacsoon has authored two best-selling biographies — Einstein: His Life and Universe and Benjamin Franklin: An American Life — and also penned American Sketches: Great Leaders, Creative Thinkers, and Heroes of a Hurricane, a collection of essays on great leadership. All of his books have been published by Simon & Schuster.

A full draft from a deep well?

Jobs, who will turn 55 next week, is an intensely private individual who has lived a very colorful life. In addition to getting fired by the company he helped found and the life-changing illnesses of the last few years, he has also been linked romantically to a fair number of women, bringing into question exactly how much he will feel comfortable about revealing.

Jobs has been the subject of a half-dozen high profile books and even a made-for-television movie, though none of these efforts has had the cooperation or sanction of the man himself.

Perhaps the Jobs biography will be the first ever iBooks only best-seller? That would be an interesting twist to an already vividly lived life…

What’s your take?
