Accessory market for iPad revs up
With the new iPad tablet computer due to be released in a few weeks, the iPad accessory market is starting to liven up as well, with a plethora of companies ready to roll out add-ons for the iPad.
A large number of companies are hoping that the market for the new iPad is as great as that which has helped them build a huge arena for iPhone aftermarket accessories. Some of these companies have been in business for a long time, such as the venerable Belkin, while a host of others came into being at roughly the same time as the iPhone itself. The number of products that were invented to augment the iPhone is immense, and ranges from cases through chargers to battery enhancers. All of those items should enjoy counterparts in the iPad aftermarket, and the greater size and functionality of the iPad guarantee that the range of products will expand.
One example of the latter is a company named Scosche, a family-owned business that has enjoyed success with iPhone add-ons and will begin releasing iPad-related products in April or May. According to a Business Week story, the company’s first iPad add-on will be a stand that lets users position the tablet vertically or horizontally for easy video and photo viewing. That product will not be the last for Schosche, which plans to release as many as a dozen others this year, perhaps including a charger, an in-car dashboard mount, as well as a home audio dock which also contains audio speakers.
The market for iPad accessories may well be a large one if it has the sales success which is expected of it by both Apple and industry analysts. Many analysts expect the iPad to sell 2-3 million units in its first six months after release. There is reason to expect that revenue from iPad accessories will be large. Cell-phone users spent over $8 billion dollars on accessories for their mobile handsets in 2009, a number which was expected to grow this year even without the iPad. The iPad is due out in less than a month; let the feeding frenzy begin.
