Will Apple’s iPad be delayed?

March 2, 2010

A market analyst has predicted that the actual launch of the Apple iPad will be delayed until sometime in April due to problems in its manufacturing and supply chain for the new tablet computer.

Peter Misek, analyst at Canaccord Adams, has said that he thinks the iPad will be delayed for some unknown time period, or restricted to the United States market only, because of some unspecified problems “at the iPod’s manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision.” No details of any kind were offered by Mr. Misek, nor do the somewhat vague nature of his statements give one much faith in his predictions. It should be noted that Misek does not have a good track record with guesses about happenings at Apple, having predicted earlier this year that Apple would soon release a new iPhone tied to Verizon’s wireless network, a prediction which he later withdrew, according to a TheMoneyTimes story.

There have been no rumors from other sources about a delay in the release of the iPad tablet and Apple itself has been mute on any such news. It seems likely that if there were to be any sort of major delay in the release of this highly-anticipated device, Apple would at least be preparing its potential customers for a letdown rather than being entirely silent. To be fair, of course, Apple is not normally very open about disclosing any product news, either good or bad, until they are good and ready to do so. Still, when they say a product will be ready at a given point in time, they are almost always accurate.

Perhaps other sources will chime in with rumors and warnings about this situation, and if they do perhaps Misek’s rumor should be taken more seriously. After all, there is always the possibility that he is right. But the nature of the rumor, and the lack of corroboration from any other source, including Apple, make it look unlikely right now that there will be a launch delay or restriction on the iPad.
