Mac sales continue to surge, says NPD

March 8, 2010

For pretty much everyone else selling stuff, Christmas 2009 was so-so at best. However, Apple not only posted yet another record holiday vis-a-vis Mac sales, the company saw computer volume shoot up over 30 percent in January, as well.

NPD data, with commentary from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, whose only job seems to be interpreting those specific numbers, point to robust Mac sales this quarter, which is traditionally the company’s weakest.

“We expect the strong year-over-year growth in NPD data that we saw in January to continue in the month of February,” writes Gene Munster. “We believe this represents a buying opportunity ahead of NPD data for the month of February on March 15.”

For its part, AppleInsider adds that NPD’s data showed a 36 percent year-over-year Mac sales spike for January and that Apple’s double-digit run will like extend into February with 16 percent growth. Altogether, the company could sell up to 2.8 million Macs.

Those of keeping score at home will likely note that this surge comes is only in relation to poor sales last year. Point taken, but the portents to date still point excellent growth prospects going forward.

Thereupon, Munster says that 2010 will be the year of the Mac.” Considering that Apple posted second half growth last year of 18 percent and the data so far, that seems certain…
