Safari 4.0.5 speeds up Top Sites, plugins
Fire up Software Update because Apple’s got an important download for you. This maintenance release of the company’s popular WebKit-based browser offers important feature tweaks and fixes, including improved third-party plug-in stability (i.e. Flash) improvements.
Apple has released Safari 4.0.5, which as expected address several long-standing issues near and dear to user hearts:
- • Performance improvements for Top Sites
• Stability improvements for third-party plug-ins
• Stability improvements for websites with online forms and Scalable Vector Graphics
• Fixes an issue that prevented Safari from changing settings on some Linksys routers
• Fixes an issue that prevented some iWork.com users from commenting on documents
Although far from scientific, after a few minutes of use, I’ve noticed that Safari generally seems snappier. Also, Flash videos, such as they are, seem to load faster and playback across sites (i.e. YouTube, CNN) seems to be pretty smooth (homey don’t play games).
That said, I’ve never been a Top Sites user, so I gonna leave that sleeping dog alone. Safari’s improved SVG performance seems to work as advertised — beautiful.
Lastly, Safari 4.0.5 reportedly plugs 16 security holes just two weeks ahead of the CanSecWest hacker conference where Charlie Miller regularly uses this WebKit default browser to win cash and prizes.
Get your very own copy of Safari 4.0.5 here (30.52MB, Snow Leopard version). Additionally, there are version for Leopard, Tiger and Windows available.
Give Safari 4.0.5 a shot and come back to share you impressions of this important update.
