Patent details new Apple ‘computer’
Neither a desktop nor laptop, the mothership has filed a patent for device that just might be a “new category of computer,” or so goes an Apple patent filed back in 2008. Is the time right for wireless computing device with an integrated projector?
Patently Apple has dug up an Apple patent that’s, to say the least, interesting in a whiskey-tango-foxtrot sort of way.

- Computer systems and methods disclosed in Apple’s patent, which may provide an entirely new category of computer systems as compared to desktops and laptops.
Various embodiments contemplate using an integrated projector output as a primary visual output, as opposed to the conventional display screens involved with desktop and laptop computers. Such an approach may allow the computer system to be a “desk-free computer,” by allowing the computer system to be placed wherever desired, on a desk or table, but also on a shelf, on a floor, or even suspended from a wall or ceiling.
Naturally, power cord aside, such a device would be completely wireless, including the keyboard and mouse, and the user needn’t be located adjacent to it to operate it — what will they think of next (week)?
What was and will never be…
That said, if you pick up your local paper — assuming such a thing still exists — you’ll probably find a half-dozen or more used front, back, side or whatever projection TVs for sale. When it comes to hi-res let alone high definition display, projection technology is just so 2005.
Simply put, unless Apple’s got some super cool protection technology up its sleeve, this idea is likely isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So, however entertaining the notion of a “desk-free computer” is, don’t go selling your Apple TV or Mac mini just yet…
What’s your take?
