Find out all about your Mac, iPad

April 10, 2010

Where was your Mac made? Chances are it was assembled in China, but where over there? If you’ve ever wondered about the minutia of your particular Macintosh or Apple mobile device, here’s a (potential) way to to find out more.

Chipmunk Internationl is offering a unique online service, Klantenservice‘ that asks for your Mac’s serial and then gives you back a bunch of trivia about it’s specs, where it was made and when.

If you would like to have more information on your Macintosh (model, date of production, etc.) then enter your serial number here. All the information that we can wring from the serial number will be shown to you.

In the case of my Early 2008 MacBook, I learned that it was built in week 15 (April) of 2008 in Shanghai, China, which isn’t all that helpful because that city is about the size of Rhode Island and includes dozens of municipalities (i.e. Pudong) not mention tens of millions of people.

The catch with this service is that it relies on user provided information, which makes me wonder a bit about what Chipmunk is, if anything, up to.

Still, it seems like a harmless bit of fun…

What’s your take?
