Mid 2010 MacBook Pro benchmarks: It’s much, much faster

April 17, 2010

Have you been waiting to buy a new MacBook Pro? Well, even though Apple’s provided significant boost in battery performance, it didn’t come at the expense of performance, which is pretty darned good, too.

Cupertino’s pro portable line was selling well before the recent refresh, but will likely get a nice boost due to the improvements that Apple’s put on the table, delivering the improbable one-two punch of longer battery uptime and performance.

Macworld found that the new entry-level ($1,799) 15-inch MacBook Pro is faster than all three previous generation configurations, all of which used “faster” processors. With the single exception of iMovie ’09 export, and even that was close, the just-released 2.4GHz Apple pro portable came out on top.

That said, if performance is foremost in your mind, then might want to consider one of Apple’s universally well-regarded iMacs or an obscenely fast Mac Pro. However, as Gizmodo discovered, that’s not your only option.

More as in more

If you’ve got the scratch ($2,199) for a 2.66GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro, then you can take home performance that’s way better than bad — it’s bodacious — and still get a nice kick in the battery to boot.

Re-encoding a file with Handbrake 64-bit shows pretty well the race between CPUs. At 19:54 vs. 32:19, the Core i7 MacBook pro—even though it’s 2.66GHz vs. 2.8GHz—is just about 50% faster.
