Flaws in iPhone 4 cause Apple stock slide

July 14, 2010

Although it is hard to sort out the rumors and non-scientific guesswork around the iPhone 4 reception problem, at least one negative report has gained traction and that one has caused Apple stock to dip.

The so-called experts have been wrangling over whether or not there is an actual problem with the reception and / or the antenna assembly on the new iPhone 4. Some say the problem exists. Others say that it does not. The anecdotal reports from consumers are no clearer. Some users report that they have experienced dropped calls because of the “antenna gap” issue. Other users report that they cannot get the problem (if there is one) to manifest itself no matter how firmly their flesh bridges the gap. But, according to a MercuryNews story, one specific report has caused Apple some problems.

As we have all heard by now, the influential organization Consumer Reports took a look at the iPhone 4 and decided that it could not recommend that consumers purchase one due to the issues surrounding the “death grip” effect that may be caused by the new model’s antenna. It would appear that the magazine’s opinion has had an effect on investors, at least, since Apple stock prices slid about 4 percent after the reports came out about the Consumer Reports opinion. Most believe that this is a direct cause and effect situation; the authoritative Consumer Reports organization says the phone is flawed and the manufacturers stock prices slide.

I am one of the consumers who cannot replicate the errors with his new iPhone 4. Reception has been rock solid in all locations through which I have traveled, even if I intentionally put my finger across the infamous gap. On the other side are users that say some of their calls have been dropped because of this issue. A well-known engineer has looked at the Consumer Reports testing and said it is little better than that which any number of blogs have done, which is so say that it was unscientific. It is very hard to figure out who we should believe. As for me, all that I can do is believe my experience with the phone: no problems at all.
