Ostrich: A Safari extension that’s really a Twitter client
Are you a Twitterholic? Then at the very least you need to take a look at Jérôme Gravel-Niquet’s interesting implementation of the social networking phenomenon as an add-on for Apple’s default Mac OS browser.
Ostrich (download) is a Safari Extension that comes to market with the tagline, “Making Twitter available from every website while you browse it.” Actually, Ostrich does a good deal more than that, yet isn’t a “kitchen sink” style client.

- Features include:
- • Tweet This Page — Whenever you’re tweeting, there’s a button to link to the page you’re viewing.
• URLs are shrunk with bit.ly for minimal length.
• Unread Tweets — Ostrich keeps track of the, tweets you haven’t yet seen.
• Mentions are also tracked so that you never miss a conversation
• Reply, Retweet & Favorite — The basic actions on a tweet are all available to Ostrich users.
• Mentions & Favorites — In addition to being notified of new tweets and mentions, they are conveniently added in their respective tabs.
Ostrich is less than snappy on my 2007 iMac, though I’m still doing the usability calculus. There’s no question, though, that it’s easier just to click Ostrich than it is to look for a badge or copy-n-paste to my full-blown client.
That said, I’m not a huge Twitter user and don’t use it for the social graph. So, as a person who tweets several times a day, but obsessively, Ostrich has me interested and it will be around for at least a little while, maybe longer…
What’s your take?
