Apple readying Snow Leopard Graphics Update

August 5, 2010

After the release of Mac OS 10.6.4, many Mac gamers, as well as a top game maker, complained that the operating system update hit performance. Although Apple hasn’t made any public statements on the matter, it appears the company has heard customers and is preparing to act.

In late June, Valve Software published a blog post detailing issues with OS X 10.6.4 Update and nVidia graphics cards when playing “high performance” games. Similarly, users also noted issues playing games on Macs with the OS upgrade and ATI GPUs.

Now, MacRumors reports that the mothership has seeded the Snow Leopard Graphics Update to developers. Release notes accompanying the update say it addresses the reliability of “graphics applications and games,” while developers are being asked to focus on VRAM utilization, hot-plugging and wake-from-sleep issues.

Regardless, this year has been marked by sweeping positive changes in Mac gaming with the ongoing rollout of the Valve catalog on the Steam platform, leading to double-digit sales increases for the company. Additionally, Blizzard shipped StarCraft 2, which shattered previous PC game sales records last month, for Mac and PC simultaneously.
