Netflix making a big splash with Apple

September 1, 2010

First it was the long-awaited, and nicely wrought, iPhone application for iOS4. Now, word has it that Apple will be announcing (at today’s event) a set-top box which will allow streaming of Netflix on Apple TV.

Already on the iPad and the iPhone, Netflix is said to be a major part of Apple’s announcements today in San Francisco regarding iPod and their Apple TV product. Video and the iPad were, of course, made for each other, so it’s a marriage made in heaven. The iPhone, being significantly smaller, seemed to be a bit of a leap but Netflix video looks really good on the pixel-doubled iPhone 4. It’s just a matter of getting your eyeballs close enough to the small display. And now all the rumors, being treated as confirmed fact by most, that Apple will announce a new Apple TV product today in San Francisco that will not only be cheaper than the old one, but will also allow streaming Netflix.

As an example, a Business Week article failed to even use the word “rumor” in its story about the new Netflix-Apple TV marriage, citing three separate sources that it claims are very close to the situation. Today’s Apple event, generally thought to be mostly about the iPod, will apparently also be a venue for the Apple TV announcement, something that has also been done in the past. The Apple TV product has not exactly been a wild success in the marketplace in the past, but Apple began trying to pump some new life into the product last year, and is apparently intent on continuing.

The two companies were seemingly made for each other, with Apple long the graphics darling of the computer world and Netflix the premier provider of full-length content. Especially when you consider the mobile aspect of the situation, with the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, the two companies are perfectly matched to do wonderful business with each other. What’s next, then, a Netflix kiosk in the iTunes store? :)
