iPod touch: The more the merrier

September 7, 2010

Whereas the iPhone and iPad get most of the marketing, and generate most of the heat and light, Apple’s other handheld plays a pivotal role, netting netting millions of young users. Moreover, there’s also an important knock on effect for the ecosystem as a whole.

Asymco has spun the patchwork of available numbers from Apple and arrived at the conclusion that 37 percent of the 120-million iOS devices in circulation are iPod touches, a significant number of widgets especially considering the prominent competitor thereof is Microsoft’s Zune.

      • 120-million iOS devices sold

      • Less 59.6-million iPhone sold through June
      — Less 8-million iPhones Asymco assumes Apple sold in July and August

      • Less 3.2-million iPads sold through June
      — Less 4-million assumed sold in July and August

      • Leaving about 45.2-million iPod touches sold to date
      — 37.7 percent of total iOS devices sold to date

And, as mentioned by Steve in the vid above, iPod touch owners have downloaded 1.5-billion gaming and entertainment titles. Further, Apple’s “funnest iPod ever,” is now outselling both Sony and Nintendo’s mobile gaming devices combined.

The really interesting twist to the data is that 67 percent of touch users are 24 or under, whereas three-quarters of iPhone owners are 25 and up. So, in addition to bringing in a big chuck of cash, how much Apple never says, the iPod touch has to be a significant gateway for the Mac, iPhone and iPad, pulling users already invested in the interface and ecosystems.

So, Apple’s printing money with the iPod touch, where the heck is the competition?
