Apple releases iOS4.1 for iPhone

September 9, 2010

After some confusing stop / start action, Apple released the iOS4.1 update late yesterday, addressing a number of iPhone 4 owner concerns, patching security holes, and adding some nifty new features.

There was some confusion between what was announced at Apple’s big iPod confab last week and what actually happened, but the bottom line is that the 4.1 update for iOS made it out the door in good order yesterday. The update had been widely anticipated by both iPhone owners and the tech press. As issued from the mother ship, this is one of the most impressive updates yet between major releases.

Cupertino finally released fixes for some of the issues that were peripheral to the Antenna-gate fiasco, providing iPhone 4 users with a more stable platform from which to operate. They have fixed the problem with the proximity sensor which could cause your face to hang up your phone. That was the only one of the iPhone problems which your author experienced, with my beard causing button-beeping during a single conversation. Apple has also cured some Bluetooth evils, mainly centered around an inability of the phone to see Bluetooth devices, and the quality of Bluetooth audio has been improved.

Better yet, there are a number of new goodies buried in iOS4.1. For the gamers among us, there is the Game Center, a centralized multi-player game center for Apple mobile devices, with a few social networking features thrown in. There is a very nice implementation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology available for the iPhone 4 (only) camera, producing some splendid visual effects. The iPhone 4 is truly making the best of its cameras. Users are also now able to rent TV shows and access the Ping social network from iTunes, which also added a snazzy new logo.

The update also fixes some by-now-normal security problems and adds some welcome tweaks to the iOS user interface, according to an IGN story. The download of the update was a little slow, but I got mine during prime time. It’s probably faster already. The installation itself was flawless and wen without a hitch. This update would be worth the price of admission, even if there was a price of admission.

Oh, by the way, iPad owners are still waiting.

    I am scared to update my apple iphone 4 because i just jail broke it. I read at http://www.uprighttechs.com/apple-iphone4.php that the update wont undo the jail brake is that true?

    @Matt

    performing any ios firmware update will erase all of your devices data. thats why having a backup in place beforehand is always a good idea. the backup and restore processes ‘i believe’ are automated though just before and after the update anyhow.

    as for a 4.1 jailbreak, one isnt out just yet.

    IOS 4.1 didnot fix the bluetooth problem, it’s even worse than before. Drop connection from Bluetooth device, sound muffled and static making conversation over bluetooth undesirable. Tried out on 2 iphone 4s with 6 different brands/models of bluetooth headsets Motorola, Jawbone, Jabra… all with the same result (These devices never had any problem with iphone 3G). Felt like it’s more of a iphone 4 hardware issue than software.
