Apple likely to sell 28 million iPads in 2011
The sales of Apples iPad tablet computer have been nothing short of phenomenal, opening up a completely new computer marketplace single-handedly. An industry analyst says that trend will continue.
Maynard Um, an analyst at UBS Investment Research, has looked at the numbers, given his Ouija board a spin and rolled his crystal ball. Um believes, on the strength of Apple’s sales of the iPad and his analysis, that the Cupertino company will likely continue to own the tablet marketplace through the end of next year. His analysis shows that Apple will sell at least 28 million of their tablets on 2011, and he does not seem willing to hedge his bets. Um says that there will not be any viable competition to the iPad “for some time.” That will allow them to keep their momentum going through the end of next year, at least.
Um also says that Apple products, especially the iPhone, iPad, and iPod, will be the stars if this year’s holiday season. He also believes that the sales of the iPad are hurting the sales of Windows-powered PC laptops, though they are not negatively affecting sales of Apple’s Mac computers. Um says of this part of the phenomenon, “We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make purchases within this segment.” Certainly, this would account for lower sales of netbooks.
According to a PC Magazine story, Um is also of the opinion that there will be a CDMA iPhone in early 2011, adding his weight to that of many fellow analysts. Um mentions Verizon in that same breath, also like any number of industry watchers. Taken as a whole, Um’s report sets a number of markets up for an all-Apple win, both for the rest of this year and during the next.
