After some confusing stop / start action, Apple released the iOS4.1 update late yesterday, addressing a number of iPhone 4 owner concerns, patching security holes, and adding some nifty new features.

From NSA spook to celebrity Mac hacker, he’s traveled a rather unique career path and resides at an interesting crossroads — the “frenemy” insider the rest of us look to when security’s on the menu. Although he doesn’t always bear glad tidings for the fairer platform, Miller’s no hater and that kind of cognitive dissonance is sometimes difficult take.

Whereas the iPhone and iPad get most of the marketing, and generate most of the heat and light, Apple’s other handheld plays a pivotal role, netting netting millions of young users. Moreover, there’s also an important knock on effect for the ecosystem as a whole.

One wonders how many areas there are in which Apple and Google can possibly compete, but the pair keep finding more. Now there are rumors that Google is going to be launching an iTunes clone late this year.

Apple generally puts out two sets of updated product every year in the run up to Christmas — new iPods, which we’ve already seen, and spec bumped Macs, which haven’t yet been outed. That said, the best time for the mothership to introduce software for the Mac would be alongside new hardware.
