AppleCare now transferrable? Only kind of…
A small fillip to buyers of Apple products and it’s practical effect will be muted at best. Why? Well, the you can only transfer an AppleCare policy from a product purchased in the last 30 days and transfer it to a new eligible product — not exactly generous.
Boy Genius Report has received and published an internal Apple Store memo regarding AppleCare Protection Plan changes. Although it seems like a sweeping change, practical application will be very limited.
As of 28 October 2010, customers who want to transfer their AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) coverage to a new product may do so instead of having to cancel the agreement and purchase a new one. The product originally covered by the agreement must have been purchased within the past 30 days, and the new product must be of the kind that can be covered by that agreement.
This change already applies to AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone as of 23 June 2010. It now applies to all other APP agreements, as well:
That’s pretty darned narrow and I imagine a lot people, having read the headlines, will be heading to their local Apple Stores to get their old policies transferred or get refunds on recently purchased plans. That’s not going to happen.
Again, this story makes for a compelling headline, but there’s very little of substance here…
What’s your take?
