iTunes 10.1 yes, iOS 4.2 no
Apple has quietly released the first iTunes 10 update, which purports to support a number of the iOS4.2 features, but that iOS 4.2 update we have all been waiting for is nowhere to be found.
By now, you should have been asked to update your iTunes to version 10.1, which offers support for a number of the very best features which are said to exist in the iOS 4.2 update. You have almost undoubtedly heard that the Beatles are coming, the Beatles are coming to the iTunes store, welcome news after so long an absence. You will not have heard, however, anything at all bout the release of iOS4.2, which is a much bigger topic of discussion than either of the things that Apple seems to want to talk about. When, one wonders, will Apple finally release the code that millions of iPad and iPhone users are waiting for?
The iTunes update adds support for AirPlay technology, which can stream music, videos and other media to Apple TV and similar devices, plus support for syncing with iPhones, iPads and other iOS 4.2-equipped products, according to the LA Times. The announcement today from Apple will upgrade out iTunes music to the Beatles. But nowhere in all of this is any news on the elusive iOS4.2 update that will finally bring multitasking to millions of iPad users who want it very badly, plus all of the other features that iPhone 4 users have had since day one, and also promises Airplay, Wi-Fi printing and a bevy of other goodies for all Apple mobile devices.
Promises is the operative word, of course. It may be that 4.2 has been delayed because they can’t get Wi-Fi to work right, and other similar glitches in the new code. It probably is not because they are adding support for a Verizon iPhone to the mobile mix, though anything is possible. All that we know for sure is that a gaggle of new features have been hyped, all Apple mobile users want them, and no one, absolutely no one is being decent enough to tell millions of us what is going on.
