White iPhone spotted, iOS4.2 not so much
Waiting watchers (unspecified) have apparently seen and reported on a public appearance of the fabled white iPhone 4, but another member of the Apple flock, iOS4.2, is nowhere to be found.
Someone is circulating photos which are purported to be a white iPhone. The phone in question has what is said to be a redesigned antenna system, something to ward off a repeat of the Antenna-gate which followed the release of the black iPhone 4. Just to sweeten the rumor pot, this particular white iPhone is also said to have the Verizon logo in the status bar, which would make it an even rarer sighting. The source also says that the phone in questions does not have a SIM card, which (if true) would bear out rumors that Apple’s new phones will have a virtual SIM card, all according to a rumor report in the LA News Monitor.
Despite the photos (and all of us are aware of the term “photoshopped”) most observers are not lending much credence to this particular rumor. Photos of a white iPhone 4 have appeared in other places and contexts (including the Apple Web site) and nothing has yet come to fruition. The consensus is that the photos are fakes, done by a source who may also have an excellent background in Photoshop, and a little free time on his hands. Similar rumors have been discovered to be no more than pranks in the recent past, and this one is likely no different.
Although we are fairly sure that iOS4.2 is not a prank, a lot of people have been hoping that an official version of same would be spotted in the wild well before we saw a White iPhone. So far, no such luck. The new iOS version, which is surely much more than a rumor, has still not made an appearance, at least an official version, leaving iPad and iPhone users alike waiting for news of its relief. As a palliative, Apple has said that the iOS4.2 update would be out in November, and November is not over yet.
