The scoop on the iPad 2

December 30, 2010

The Apple iPad rumor mill appears to be running overtime when it comes to the second generation iPad. If Apples really expects to sell 65 million of these things next year, maybe the iPad 2 will have all of these.

The latest DigiTimes rumor has Apple building 65 million iPads during the year 2011. One would suspect that if these units get built, Apple will expect to actually sell them. And if they are going to sell that many more than they sold this year, the iPad 2 had better be a very feature-rich device. Thankfully, there is no shortage of candidates for new features when you begin to look at all of the rumors that have shown up across the last couple of months.

Faster- Some say that the new iPad 2 will have a faster processor than the original model, once again designed by Apple, but maybe in a dual-core configuration.

Thinner- The updated iPad may be a bit thinner than the original.

Flatter- The new iPad will have a flat front and back, perhaps similar to the iPhone 4.

More RAM- The RAM size will be increased from 256 to 512 on the updated device.

USB Port- The iPad 2 will have a USB port, or a mini-USB port, perhaps as the primary charging port or perhaps in addition to the current 30-pin connector.

Sound- The next-gen iPad will have larger, louder speakers mounted behind grills, perhaps along the back edge of the device.

Wireless- The iPad 2 will either come in separate models for CDMA and GSM, or it will be built using a chip that can connect to both in a ‘World iPad’ model.

Cameras- When the new iPad appears, it will have both front and rear cameras.

Gyroscope- The new iPad will have a gyroscope, the better to play games.

Display- The new device will have a higher resolution display, but not as high as the new iPhone Retina display.

As noted in a RedOrbit story, no one really knows what the next generation iPad will look like or have as a features list. Some of the things on this list are likely to appear, and any or all of them would make the iPad 2 a better device for both consumer and business use.
