t may be a case of one star rising while another sets, but the Apple App Store, the home of all sanctioned iPhone and iPad software, is on a pace to outsell the iTunes music store by March 2011.

It is beginning to look as if the “Home” button on Apple’s upcoming iPad 2 and iPhone5 are things of the past, in favor of some new gestures that will do the hard button’s job and perhaps more.

Apple’s next generation tablet is expected to arrive one year almost to the day or a few more, depending on which ends up being right, in buyer hands. Also, friends overseas — just like last year — won’t be getting the new iteration until months later, though the jury’s still out on whether Apple will stagger the release of Wi-Fi and 3G versions.

The sales of Mac computers were truly a growth industry in the 2010 fourth quarter, grabbing almost 10 percent of the personal computer marketplace, with sales up fully 23 percent over 2009.

Of course, once the device actually comes out you can be sure that at least one of the usual suspects — i.e. Gizmodo, Ryan Block et al — will find at least one ham-handed individual that can make the Verizon iPhone and its redesigned antenna drop bars (or exhibit some other inane non-issue). For the rest of us, however, the CDMA version of the Apple smartphone is looking very, very good.

Paying full Apple prices and being subjected, voluntarily or otherwise, to the Geek Squad is something no one should endure. Soon, for a lucky few, a bigger selection of Macs, iPads and more will be arriving at Best Buy and the cherry on top will be in-store Genius Bar service.
