Verizon posts VZAccess Manager update, Mac now LTE compatible

February 1, 2011

Big Red’s “4G” network is available in nearly 40 markets and one of two LTE modems offered by the carrier can be used with a Mac. Does this make your glass full, half full, half empty or something entirely unsatisfactory, hmm? Kind of reminds me of William Gibson: “The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.”

Last week, Verizon delivered an over-the-air firmware update for their LG VL600 4G LTE modem. Unfortunately, drivers for the device were then and are still unavailable.

Nevertheless, our friends at Macworld report that Verizon is now distributing their VZAcess Manager 7.2.4 (2534b), which now works on the Mac and, happily enough, delivers drivers for the Pantech UML290, another LTM modem supported by Verizon.

And, that’s where the good news ends and the quid pro quos begin. For example, Big Red offers LTE data services in 38 US markets, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicagoland, St. Louis, the Twin Cities, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Phoenix, Denver and Las Vegas.

Further, as Verizon’s LTE is faster than regular old 3G, the carrier’s charging a premium for the privilege with a 5GB account selling for $50 per month and $80 for a 10GB plan. Of course, you’ll need to sign a two-year contract, as well.

That said, Big Red previously hinted that LG VL600 drivers would arrive sometime this month.
