In 2005, Apple made the bold move of buying up the available Flash supply while rolling out a pair of price compelling Flash-based media players, the iPod nano and iPod shuffle. We don’t know what the iPad 2 looks like yet, or whether Apple will introduce other tablets this year, but the panel supply’s pretty much locked down.

There are folks who say that iOS will eventually subsume Mac OS X, that desktop computers are just 20th century. Still, the truck crowd is unswayed noting that you can’t program for the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad without a Mac. Well, there could be a third way forward.

June looks to be a very, very busy month for the mothership. In addition to the annual Worldwide Developer Conference, current rumorological musings suggest that there will be a new iPhone and updated MacBook Air, sporting a faster, more efficient version of Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor and chipset package. Time will tell.

Apple discontinued its one and only rack mountable server on Jan. 31 and there was much gnashing of teeth among the IT administration crowd. Now, however, there’s a new way to put some iron — OK, maybe just tinfoil — in your back office and it costs hundreds less than an entry-level Xserve.

Various MacBook Pro sellers are showing dwindling supplies of the MacBook Pro. However with Intel’s Sandy Bridge purportedly at the heart of the new models due until later this month, availability of refreshed Apple pro portables gets pushed out until March.

Every year for the last three or four, the approach of Apple’s regular September iPod update has brought whispers that the original hard disk-based model would be discontinued. Now, however, the end could indeed be nigh as stocks of the long-serving model run low.

For better and worse, there has never been a brick n’ mortar retail software trade in the Apple mobile space. From day one, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has been digital only. Now, the mothership is preparing to all but empty the Apple Store of retail package software for the Mac.

Peruse the computer section of Craigslist in just about any city and you will find them — software pirates selling hand-lettered disks out of their parents’ basements or grubby walkups. With multiple online identities and invariably a “legitimate” low-cost PC repair business as a front, they’ve got apps you want at unbelievably low prices.

In general, if you want to find out how well something works, just follow the money. Who has to discount and which ones are getting a premium for their stuff? If a new mobile advertising study is to be believed, then Apple’s got a sleeper hit on its hands that advertisers are just waking up to.
