Wanna iPad 2? Gazelle the old one

March 3, 2011

Now’s a great time to buy a used or refurbished first generation iPad. Look on Craigslist or international auction site eBay, and you’ll find lots of Apple tablets for sale. Moreover, the mothership is blowing out refurbished models with the 16GB model selling for $150 off its suggested retail price.

Don’t just sell it — Gazelle it! That simple appeal has found a willing audience in the many original iPad owners that want to sell their tablets and get the latest, greatest model featuring the dual-core A5 processor and 9X graphics.

“It was a perfect storm, in part because of the short time between the announcement and availability,” Kristina Kennedy, Gazelle’s director, brand and communications, told Macworld UK. “This is a very good indicator that Apple will sell a lot of iPad 2s.”

Does anyone doubt that Apple will sell a lot of iPad 2s? At this point, even the most jaundiced hater knows that the success of the second-generation Apple tablet is all but assured.

Buying down

Whether you’re a bargain hunter by nature or one by virtue of the great recession, there are a lot of used and refurbished iPad deals on the market right now.

“Last summer, we only did about 1,200 iPhones the day of the [iPhone 4] announcement,” Kennedy said. “We had more than 2,000 iPads in just over an hour Wednesday. This was our biggest trade-in for a single product ever.”

And, Gazelle isn’t the only outlet selling. For example, Apple has slashed refurbished iPad prices with the 16GB wi-fi only model going for $349, which is a tempting $150 off the price of a new unit.

That said, at least one 16GB iPad with 3G sold on eBay for just $300 and that’s $329 off the $629 retail price of a new one — a really good price. Although you won’t find consummated deals listed on Craigslist, I know from personal experience that you can often find even better offers there.

Ready to go retro? There are some really great prices available on the interwebs today and they’ll probably get better as people get more desperate to sell…

What’s your take?
