2011 MacBook Pro has serious [iPad] juice
If you’ve got a PPC Mac, you can pretty much forget about charging an iPad from a USB port. Further, more modern Intel Macs only have a single port that will trickle charge Apple’s tablet. However, change is in the wind because the mothership’s most recent pro portable refresh includes a special treat for iPad owners.
When it comes to making sense of what Apple’s up to, the collective is where it’s at. A case in point comes via a potentially random data point in Ars Technica’s original iPad view in which they note that the “high-powered” USB port on a 2008 MacBook Pro offers 1000mA of charging power.
Interestingly enough that’s the same as the high-powered port on my 2007 iMac, which can trickle charge an iPad. That is, whereas the tablet reports “Not Charging,” it slowly but surely does gain charge.

Add to the two bottom numbers to get the charging power
However, 9 to 5 Mac has discovered that the Sandy Bridge-powered MacBook Pro’s high-powered USB port provides 2100mA, which is the same as the mothership’s iPhone and iPad wall wort chargers.
That’s pretty sweet and one imagines we’ll be seeing more of the same in the May iMac update, which is also expected to be Sandy Bridge.
