2011 iMac rumor gets a refresh

March 31, 2011

We’ve been hearing that Apple won’t be releasing any new hardware at the Worldwide Developer Conference, which traditionally has seen at least one big new bit o’ kit. That doesn’t, however, mean we won’t be seeing a plenitude of new gear this year and an updated iMac is the first new product making its way through the rumor mill.

Last week, Blorge published its first substantive Sandy Bridge iMac rumor. We said at the time that May was the likely timeframe for release.

Now, a fresh tweet — I can tell because it’s still steaming — from Brian Tong tweaks the rumor just a little.

Thereupon, the collective wisdom of the blogsphere is that this year’s iMac refresh will include Sandy Bridge (a big, big performance boost), Thunderbolt (a quantum leap over FireWire and USB) and generally look like that last year’s Apple all-in-one.

Interestingly, we have heard nothing about this year’s MacBook and Mac mini refreshes, which one presumes will also bring Sandy Bridge to Apple’s low-end.

Heard any good or even plausible rumors? Please share…

I’m really hoping for two Thunderbolt ports each with dedicated bandwidth on the new iMacs. (and a GPU that wouldn’t gasp and pant driving two additional 27″ displays)

On the Mac/work/photo/video side, this would make the next iMac the ideal upgrade for my PowerMac G5.

    On the Mac/play side, this would be a perfect x-plane machine..(with two additional 27″ displays ;-) )

On the Windows/play side, it would be nice to be able to use the iMac and 2 additional 27″ displays for iRacing in Bootcamp..

The new iMac should have been out in February, but Apple isn’t fond of Intel’s habit of releasing consumer desktop CPUs ahead of pro CPUs. Good thing for Apple that most of their customers don’t pay any attention to Intel releases.

Unfortunately for Apple their unwillingness to treat my eyes with respect and keep their hardware releases less than a quarter behind that other platform means they have lost my business this year. If I haven’t gone hackintosh by then I will admire my reflection in the early 2012 iMac and then go hackintosh.
