Amazon opens Mac Downloads Store

This will be billed as Amazon’s attempt to compete with the Apple’s Mac App Store, which it is. However, the larger narrative is what’s important here — the era of largely empty boxes baring little plastic disks encoded with bits of information is coming to an end.

Amazon’s Mac Software Downloads Store with more than 250 titles is open for business. That’s good news.

Additionally, anyone purchasing a software download can get $5 off their order until June 1 by using Coupon Code SAVE5MAC. That’s also good news.

Mac Download store features an install-less download process where the customer gets just the product without any unwanted extras, making for faster and easier purchases. Plus, downloads are conveniently backed up in your Games and Software Library where you can download an unlimited number of times for personal use” — Amazon Mac Downloads Store

The bad news, and this is something that’s happened in music, movies and books, is that prices are the same for boxed software as they are for the downloads, which is bull shiitake. Why do digital, download only products cost the same as physical products?

And, isn’t it interesting that Microsoft and Adobe both have products available for sale on Amazon’s Mac store but not Apple’s…

What’s your take?

Providing that the license is transferable and you can download the software any time you like then i wouldn’t have a problem paying the same for a digital download, but that is a lot of “if”s.
