Time to eulogize Apple’s white MacBook
If you look all the way back to the beginning, long before Intel could be found inside, then Apple’s been selling white consumer grade notebooks since May 2001. Now, although the long-loved MacBook (nee iBook) isn’t dead yet, the time would seem to be right for it to fade to black.
AppleInsider has chronicled news from around the world that the little white portable, born of a toilet seat, is currently out of stock. Moreover, vendors also report that they have no idea when let alone if fresh supplies will be available.
Apple’s venerable consumer-grade portable has occupied the same $999 price as the MacBook Air, which analysts and insiders have repeatedly called the star of Apple’s computer line, since last Fall. So, it would make a lot of sense that the MacBook either has to find a new home, $899 for example, or just go away.
Thereupon, Sandy Bridge-based MacBook Air models are widely expected to ship alongside Mac OS X Lion on July 19. There have been no rumors or sightings concerning Apple’s little white portable.
It bears mentioning that the MacBook is the only white computer still sells — all others are milled from Aluminum.
Personally, it would be more than great if Apple knocked a $100 (or more) off the price and kept selling the MacBook, perhaps just to education.

You don’t cast aside a moneymaker. You upgrade it to a better line. If you’re smart, you do it at the same or better price.
