Before the lawyers, Jobs’ peace overture rebuffed

September 29, 2011

Apple has gotten a lot of bad press for its litigious ways. Whereas no one doubts that Cupertino invented the smartphone and tablet, people have faulted the company for fighting its product battles in court versus letting nature take its course in the marketplace. But that’s not the whole picture.

Flashback trojan finding willing victims

September 28, 2011

When it comes to a trojan, the only way you can become infected is to click install. It’s that simple — bad things only happen if you allow yourself to be fooled. And, here’s how not to get fooled by this latest trojan, which as these things go is fairly sophisticated.

Flashback: Another day, another trojan

September 27, 2011

Apple updated OS X’ integrated trojan blocker over the weekend to protect against Trojan Dropper. Now, another trojan, Flashback, has surfaced and this one, whether the irony was intended or not, masquerades as an Adobe Flash Player installer. Again, however, the threat level is believed to be low.

The end definitely isn’t nigh, new trojan thwarted

September 26, 2011

What’s a malware writer to do? Whereas the creators of MacDefender and QHost enjoyed their moments of inglorious fame before they got shut down, a new trojan detected at the end of July has already been unceremoniously nipped in the proverbial bud by the mothership.

Planets align for iCloud, iPhone

September 25, 2011

A place for everything and everything in its place. It seems Apple has chosen a Tuesday for their announcement(s) and the rest is similarly just as you’d expect: Mac, iPhone and iTunes betas are all winding down — the mothership is generally pulling together the other loose ends.

Stupid Lion tricks: Cycle Launchpad’s background image

September 22, 2011

You can be a Mac user for years, decades even, and still not know it all. Case in point is this little trick for tweaking on the fly what background OS X Lion Launchpad displays when it is active. And, just because you also need to get real work done, too, I’ve tossed in links for a half dozen really useful OS X 10.7 tips and tricks.

Satisfaction is the quality

September 21, 2011

There’s a lot of FUD out there over who makes the best computers — too cheap (PC), too expensive (Mac), too insecure (all computers), too closed (!!!) or too whatever (Linux). However, whereas individual pundits and users are just so much noise and not much help when it comes to buying decisions, there’s one measure that trumps all others.

Adobe updates Elements apps

September 20, 2011

Though the new versions of Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements aren’t yet on the Mac App Store, the previous version is the number seven top grossing app, which is pretty good for a year-plus-old chunk o’ code. Which brings to mind an interesting question: How many people, ordinary people, are still using the full version of Photoshop?

Undergrads: Macs popular, PlayBook doesn’t exist

September 19, 2011

Users and pundits alike have panned Apple’s 2011 Back to School promotion, sparking some analysts to predict poor Mac sales. However, data from the real world points robust Mac sales, though the same survey raises questions about iPhone and iPad popularity at US universities.

Apple to goose MacBook Pro specs

September 15, 2011

From 2007 through 2010, the mothership gave us new iPhones in the June/July timeframe. This year we’ve gotten none to date, but one is expected sometime next month. Likewise, in most years, Apple will update its MacBook Pro once, but there are exceptions to this rule of thumb and we might be getting one of those pleasant anomalies soon.
