MacBook Air going large

October 31, 2011

What’s the best antidote to a minor and generally unsatisfying refresh? What we really, really want and in fact need is a full on, stem to stern makeover, which seems to be in the cards. But are you ready to go without spinning platters for storage?

A report out of Japan from the increasingly quoted Macotakara claims that an ultrathin 15-inch MacBook has been developed with testing wrapping up. The critical component is said to be the LCD, or a related part, which one imagines might be difficult to make suitably rigid at that size.

Also from the “coming right along” department is the news that Intel has begun manufacturing its highly integrated and power efficient Ivy Bridge family of processors and chipsets. Built using a 22nm process, we can expect broad availability in Spring 2012, which Macotakara says is the rough timeframe for this major MacBook Pro refresh.

Disks, shmisks…

That said, will Apple’s MBP next come to market sans optical drive? That seems almost inevitable.

How about traditional hard disk drives? I image the question will be left up to the buyer — “Will that be Flash or platters, sir?”

Hmm, perhaps an updated name should is in the works, too. I’m liking a mash up of new and old — MacBook Pro Air…

What’s your take?

Now that Jobs is gone they should go back to the name “PowerBook.” “MacBook” is so lame.
