Upon hearing that Apple posted a net profit of $6.62 billion on revenues of $28.27 billion, or $7.05 per share, “investors” prompted sent AAPL lower — go figure. The company beat its own guidance, but fell short of analyst expectations. What’s up with that? Consumers held off buying ahead of the iPhone 4S and that led to the “disappointing” results.

The Beard, a.k.a. Jim Dalrymple, has already told us that Apple developed a 7-inch alongside the Apple’s “magical and revolutionary” 9.7-inch iPad. Given Dalrymple’s long and highly accurate rumorological record, I tend to believe him. So, whether or not we’ll eventually see one likely depends on how successful the Kindle Fire turns out to be.

Outside of retail, about 20,000 people work for the mothership. Thereupon, 5 percent of those are engineers designing the chips used in the company’s world beating smartphones and tablets. That goes a long way to explaining why the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad outperform and outlast the competition while costing less to produce.

Nothing good can come of this, nothing. I’ve been looking forward with great anticipation to Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Steve Jobs. Based on nearly 50 interviews, unparalleled access to family, colleagues and friends, even if it’s pure hagiography this book will the first and best chance to see inside that world, that life.

Let the tributes flow. However, the definitive insider story delivered by the man himself into the capable hands of Walter Isaacson will ship on Monday, October 24. Until then we will have to satisfy ourselves with the available excerpts, which are short yet nonetheless rather satisfying and a fitting tease for what is sure to be the book of the decade.

When you’re Steve Jobs, you get a seat right next to President Obama at dinner, just cuz. When you’re the president, you probably shouldn’t be surprised when Jobs gives you an iPad. But this kind of coziness among the well connected isn’t particularly surprising, especially given the shared admiration the two men have.
