Apple’s Jonathan Ive ‘absolutely thrilled’ over Knighthood
Come Monday morning, or whenever he gets back to his 1 Infinite Loop studio in Cupertino, California, I suspect Apple senior vice president of design will be in for a bit of good natured ribbing. To whit he could reply, whilst looking condescendingly down his nose, “That’s, Sir Jonny, to you, peasant.”
The kid from Chingford is doing alright. Best known for his world changing iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad designs, Jonathan Ive has a new claim to fame — he has been named a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE).
The BBC reports that Ive is “both humbled and sincerely grateful” for the honor.
“I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making,” said Ive, who joined Apple in 1992 and has since played a key role in creating the most iconic devices of our time.
Steve Jobs dreamed up the iPhone, but Jonathan Ive created it. As Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, Ive, 43, is an expert at manufacturing lust. Like his boss, he is a perfectionist who leads a small team working in near secrecy. Most Apple employees aren’t allowed in his studio. From the iPod to the iPhone to the iPad, his contributions have set the course not just for Apple but for design more broadly” — Smartest designer: Jonathan Ive, Fortune
“What’s made him so outstandingly successful is the relationship he’s had with Steve Jobs and Apple,” said Deyan Sudjic, director, Design Museum. “He’s been working there for 19 years and has built up the kind of relationship that’s very rare.”
Very rare indeed.
Congratulations, Jonathan and please don’t make us wait too long for your next opus!
Some time next week would be just great…
What’s your take?
