Cool things beget cool things and here’s a prime example of that axiom in action. A Mac, any Mac, used together with an iPad is a powerful combination for productivity — keep all your work in front you and within reach. Here’s a great way to do that with a lot of style.

Apple is a 90-90 company. That is, they make products that appeal to the needs of 90 percent of the people, 90 percent of the time. Assuming that’s true, where does the Mac Pro fit into the company’s future plans? Perhaps not at all, though we might not want to write Apple’s big tower off just yet.

For the rest of us, especially those that don’t get tech news printed on dead trees, that Apple-branded computers clean up year after in this particular magazine’s Reader Choice awards is more than a little ironic. Elitist snark aside, Macs are nevertheless “personal computers” and all of the other awards for Apple’s other products are, well, sauce for the goose.

So, saddle up for a side-by-side video processing comparison, but you might want to hide your credit card first.

Replacing a hard drive in an original 1997 iMac is like pulling a tooth. Nevertheless, it’s doable — knuckle scraping parts aside that didn’t always fit back together, patience and time would get the done job. Apple’s taken that certainty and turned it on its head with the newest all-in-one models.

Apple’s spec sheets only blandly mention 802.11n compatibility and make no mention of any enhancement. However, if you’ve got the latest Apple all-in-one and pro portable, as well as a compatible dual-band router, you’re in for a pleasant surprise that will have your new Mac squirting bits.

Just reading the specs on these beautiful beasts gives me head-to-toe chills. A product line that was once definitely consumer, generally underpowered and derided by “serious” users as toy-like is now ready to handle the toughest, most-processor intensive jobs — anything.
