HoverBar completes your workspace

February 7, 2012

Cool things beget cool things and here’s a prime example of that axiom in action. A Mac, any Mac, used together with an iPad is a powerful combination for productivity — keep all your work in front you and within reach. Here’s a great way to do that with a lot of style.

One-in-three all-in-one computers are iMacs

January 5, 2012

When the original iMac shipped back in August 1998, the industry and its various hangers on (analysts) variously and collectively stated that the form factor was just so 1984. A dozen plus years later and Apple has the hottest product in this fast growing all-in-one category.

Apple’s Jonathan Ive ‘absolutely thrilled’ over Knighthood

December 31, 2011

Come Monday morning, or whenever he gets back to his 1 Infinite Loop studio in Cupertino, California, I suspect Apple senior vice president of design will be in for a bit of good natured ribbing. To whit he could reply, whilst looking condescendingly down his nose, “That’s, Sir Jonny, to you, peasant.”

Apple TV: More signal than noise?

December 27, 2011

Roll your eyes and groan — here comes a rumorological musing fresh from the Silicon Isle. Yup, Taiwan and that invariably means DigiTimes. Whereas I’ve studiously avoided reporting the latest Apple TV — a real, honest-to-goodness television — emanations wafting on the breeze from that source, discernible and believable patterns are forming.

Mac Pro, thy time isn’t nigh

November 2, 2011

Apple is a 90-90 company. That is, they make products that appeal to the needs of 90 percent of the people, 90 percent of the time. Assuming that’s true, where does the Mac Pro fit into the company’s future plans? Perhaps not at all, though we might not want to write Apple’s big tower off just yet.

Apple cleans up [again] in PCMag awards

July 19, 2011

For the rest of us, especially those that don’t get tech news printed on dead trees, that Apple-branded computers clean up year after in this particular magazine’s Reader Choice awards is more than a little ironic. Elitist snark aside, Macs are nevertheless “personal computers” and all of the other awards for Apple’s other products are, well, sauce for the goose.

New iMacs blur distinction between all-in-one, workstation

July 11, 2011

Apple’s highly regarded all-in-one desktop has been winning converts in the workstation space for some years already, but fresh benchmarks show how much more powerful the latest generation really is. So, saddle up for a side-by-side video processing comparison, but you might want to hide your credit card first.

Apple obviates DIY Mid 2011 iMac HDD upgrades

May 13, 2011

Replacing a hard drive in an original 1997 iMac is like pulling a tooth. Nevertheless, it’s doable — knuckle scraping parts aside that didn’t always fit back together, patience and time would get the done job. Apple’s taken that certainty and turned it on its head with the newest all-in-one models.

Early 2011 iMac, MacBook Pro capable of 450Mbps Wi-Fi

May 6, 2011

Apple’s spec sheets only blandly mention 802.11n compatibility and make no mention of any enhancement. However, if you’ve got the latest Apple all-in-one and pro portable, as well as a compatible dual-band router, you’re in for a pleasant surprise that will have your new Mac squirting bits.

Apple says, quad core for all!

May 3, 2011

Just reading the specs on these beautiful beasts gives me head-to-toe chills. A product line that was once definitely consumer, generally underpowered and derided by “serious” users as toy-like is now ready to handle the toughest, most-processor intensive jobs — anything.
