Bigger than big. Apple breaks free of pack

January 31, 2012

The alpha has roared and it’s just a simple matter of math, adding two numbers together to arrive at one gloriously ginormous sum. Whereas some still argue about whether or not Apple’s iPad is a computer, the bean counters are starting to fall in line with the reality on the ground — the Mac plus iPad make Apple the world’s biggest computer company and not by a little.

Real Chinese talk about Apple, manufacturing and labor

January 27, 2012

From the late 19th Century through mid-20th Century, it was the United States that was the world’s workshop and we have the human, social and environmental scars to prove it. China’s now going through those growing pains and the people actually living there in the here and now have a very different response to Apple’s second-hand abuses than the Western news media.

Record Mac quarter looms

January 18, 2012

By a big margin or just a little? A consensus of analysts, more than 85 percent of amateur and professional, estimate that Apple shipped more Mac last quarter than they did in the September quarter, which was yet another record for a company that has outgrown the industry for six years. And, iPhones? Pretty every analyst is saying expect huge numbers.

Scott Forstall’s 10-year wait for the prize

January 17, 2012

Who doesn’t like a juicy palace intrigue? To date there’s no visible hint of that at 1 Infinite Loop, but the potential — a nice enough place to start — for one exists. Although there’s no question Steve Jobs wanted Tim Cook to run the company, a new book also makes it clear that Scott Forstall probably wants the job more than anyone else.

Pro video was Apple’s to lose and they are

January 16, 2012

There seem to be two kinds of Final Cut Pro users these days — those with huge investments in legacy workflows and those who appreciate the features + performance improvements Apple baked into the new version. Those in the former group are dropping Apple’s pro video app and the big beneficiary so far seems to be Avid.

Thunderbolt iPhone? Don’t count on it

January 15, 2012

Rumors that Apple will switch the iPhone from a USB to Thunderbolt interface have been making the rounds. And, honestly, it sounds like a reasonable move for our favorite fruit company as they’ve taken a lead role in not only promoting this tech but also delivering real, actual shipping Thunderbolt products.

Mac Pro, thy time isn’t nigh

November 2, 2011

Apple is a 90-90 company. That is, they make products that appeal to the needs of 90 percent of the people, 90 percent of the time. Assuming that’s true, where does the Mac Pro fit into the company’s future plans? Perhaps not at all, though we might not want to write Apple’s big tower off just yet.

Jobs on the HP fuster cluck

October 22, 2011

And, the soundbites continue roll. Walter Isaacson’s biography of the iconic CEO ships on Monday, for those that got in early, yet the web is already awash in quotes. That said, although I ordered the hardcover version months ago, it wouldn’t ship until October 27 and I’ve since canceled that, purchasing the Kindle edition instead.

Hungry, hungry cannibal: Apple doubles down on PCs

October 19, 2011

What’s eating you? If you’re a Windows PC manufacturer, chances are the answer is Apple. Cupertino all but owns the rapidly expanding tablet market, which is displacing PC sales, and is taking an ever growing share of the desktop market, having outgrown the industry for nearly six years.

Going on a Lion hunt just got easier

September 2, 2011

Most apps are Lion compatible. However, which ones also take advantage of the new features — Fullscreen, Resume, Versions, etc. — in Apple’s newest feline-flavored operating system release? Up until now, answering that question required a lot of clicks and not a little reading.
