Most apps are Lion compatible. However, which ones also take advantage of the new features — Fullscreen, Resume, Versions, etc. — in Apple’s newest feline-flavored operating system release? Up until now, answering that question required a lot of clicks and not a little reading.

Bean counters, or at least those that estimate bean counts, are saying Mac sales jumped by more than a quarter last month and Apple looks set to deliver record quarterly unit volume numbers. The interesting twist is that the mothership didn’t ship its new OS and Mac models until the end of the month.

So, introducing a touch based desktop operating system, killing the mouse and dropping the optical drive for Internet only software distribution while introducing industry changing hardware designs at competition crushing prices isn’t radical enough? When MacDefender, a trojan propagated by malicious webpages, spread earlier this year, there were pronouncements of platform doom for the rest of us. Apple then released an OS X update that upgraded their integrated malware blocker and MacDefender quickly faded to black. This time, a trojan that masquerades as a Flash plugin installer, won’t get as much traction.

Whereas the loss of the Rosetta PPC compatibility layer generated more ink (and angst), the mothership dropped another legacy feature with the release of OS X 10.7 — support for the Apple USB Modem. Although there are third-party options, the lack of a simple driver makes the $80 Apple-branded dongle obsolete by decree.

By now it’s become a mantra — a successful backup strategy includes the original plus local and off-site backups. Carbonite is the best known if not best selling commercial off-site file backup and restoration solution. Sadly, it’s not Lion compatible and, worse still, the company didn’t tell anyone until the operating system actually shipped.

On the heels of yesterday’s record quarterly results, the mothership is rolling a host new product and it’s a killer line up. Whereas the hoped across-the-board price reductions didn’t happen, pretty much all of the other rumors have come true as Apple delivers Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt and even new displays.

The rumors had just everything right about the release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and MacBook Air except, of course, the date. Obviously, Apple shipped nothing new yesterday, but fresh whispers from “sources” say new stuff is coming and it will land late next week.
